Course Set – HLTWHS005 – Conduct Manual Tasks Safely & HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid (for Personal Carers/Nurses)
This course is designed for healthcare workers involved in manual handling, from routine tasks to more hazardous ones.
It equips participants with the skills and knowledge to perform manual tasks safely and respond to first aid incidents,
including emergencies such as cardiac arrest.
Students will learn to recognise and manage hazardous manual tasks, apply safe manual handling techniques,
and understand body mechanics to prevent injury. The course also covers how to recognise and treat various first aid incidents,
call an ambulance, perform CPR, and use a defibrillator until emergency services arrive.
It includes initial intervention for serious conditions before professional medical help arrives,
providing a first aid response in a range of settings, including community and workplace environments.
Training aligns with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards,
industry codes of practice, and the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

Course Delivery
This course can be delivered in the workplace or at an Emcare WA Pty Ltd. training facility.
Course Duration
- Express: short pre-course online learning plus a short 90-minute practical assessment session
- Face to face: 690 minutes (minimum) – full face-to-face course.
Work Placement Arrangements
No work placement will be required as part of this course.

Entry Requirements
Participants must have the physical capacity to perform 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on the floor.

What Happens at the Course?
Assessment Activities
Performance Tasks and Practical Scenarios
Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include:
- Perform CPR on an adult (including the use of an AED and placing a casualty into the recovery position)
- Complete a first aid incident report form based on the simulated first aid scenario
- Perform CPR on an infant
- Manage a casualty with anaphylaxis
- Manage a casualty with asthma
- Manage a choking casualty
- Manage a casualty with non-life-threatening bleeding and shock, requiring minor wound cleaning
- Manage a casualty with a nosebleed
- Manage a casualty with a fracture and dislocation
- Manage a casualty with a sprain and strain
- Manage a casualty with envenomation (snake/funnel-web spider bite)
- Manual Handling Task: Horizontal movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
- Manual Handling Task: High to low movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
- Manual Handling Task: Low to high movement (based on the student’s workplace environment and/or job role)
Documentation
Completion of a Risk Assessment form and an Incident Report Form.
Theory Assessment
A written assessment consisting of multiple-choice and short answer questions.
